In healthy skin, the sebaceous (oil) glands produce sebum that empties onto the skin surface through the pores, which are openings in the hair follicles. When someone has acne, the hair, oils, and skin cells stick together inside the follicles. This mixture of oil and cells allows bacteria that normally live on the skin to grow within the pores causing inflammation, redness, and pain. When the wall of the follicle breaks down, bacteria, skin cells, and oils spread to nearby skin, creating lesions and spots. Acne not only affects your face, but can occur in other areas of the body, including your back.

There are various degrees of acne, which can range from breakouts of spots to infected lesions called cystic or pustular acne. At this stage there is a significant risk of acne scarring. In order to reduce the chance of scarring, receiving the correct treatment at the right time is paramount. At LDR aesthetics, we offer a range of acne treatments, including topical prescription only medications (POM) that that have been specifically designed with acne-prone skin in mind.

Acne FAQs

Does acne only affect teenagers?

Whilst acne can be associated with teenage skin, often due to hormonal changes, acne can affect anyone at any age. As we know, hormonal changes are not only limited to the teen years. Pregnancy, oral contraception, and the menopause can all be triggers that may affect our skin.

Will eating chocolate cause acne?

There is no medical evidence that any particular type of food directly causes acne, however, having a healthy balanced diet is always a good idea for overall health and glowing skin.

Does my acne mean my skin is dirty?

This is a common concern for many people; however, acne has nothing to do with hygiene directly. Ensuring your hands are clean when touching your face will help to reduce the amount of bacterial exposure your skin has. When we have a breakout of spots, it is tempting to wash more vigorously, or use a soap-based product in an attempt to clean and dry the excess oil. This may cause a rebound effect whereby your skin will produce even more oil in response. Before you know it, you are caught in a vicious cycle and seem to be getting nowhere.

Is it ok to pick or squeeze my spots?

There are 3 simple answers to this question… No, no, and no. As tempting as it is, squeezing or picking spots will not only introduce bacteria where you are trying to reduce it. It is also a sure-fire way to cause scarring.

Do I need to see my doctor for acne treatment?

There are times when it is advisable to consult your GP or dermatologist, especially if you are suffering from cystic lesions. Seeing your doctor, however, may not always be necessary. Here at LDR aesthetics, we are able to offer you a free skin consultation, either in clinic or remotely. During your consultation, we can advise you on the most appropriate treatment plan for you.
