Skin cells are renewed over a 4-week cycle, but this process can slow down as we become older. When there is a build up of older skin cells on the surface of the skin, the new skin cells underneath take longer to appear. This leads to a dull, uneven skin complexion, a build-up of make up, skin care products in addition to environment pollution. Skin pores may become enlarged and blocked which can increase the chance of spots breaking out.
You may have also noticed that there is a fine covering of soft hair over your face and neck. This soft hair is called vellus hair (peach fuzz) and can be annoying for some people. Vellus hair is also the reason that make up does not always appear to sit smoothly on your skin, or fails to last all day. Fortunately, with a dermaplaning treatment, not only is this fine hair removed, but also the old skin cells, which will in turn increase cell renewal. This reveals fresh, soft and smooth skin. The perfect canvas for flawless makeup.
With regular dermaplaning treatment, the appearance of fine lines, acne scarring and age spots will also improve.
Dermaplaning is a form of deep exfoliation. Using a sterile surgical scalpel, old skin cells and vellus hair is painless and gently removed.
Quite the opposite actually. Dermaplaning treatment is totally painless and very relaxing.
This is a very common concern when someone is thinking about dermaplaning treatment but be reassured that the soft vellus hair on your face is different to the thicker, darker hair on other parts of your body (terminal hair). For this reason, vellus hair cannot change into terminal hair, but will gradually grow back exactly the way it was before.
While regular treatments will always give the best results, there is no requirement to have repeated sessions if you choose not to. Your skin and vellus hair will simply return to its pre-treatment appearance.
Every four weeks is the recommended time between treatments. This allows for a whole skin cell cycle to be completed. The fine vellus hair also slowly returns during this time.
There are commercially available dermaplaning tools that you can purchase and use at home. There are a few things to consider however before you try this. Commercially available tools are not sharp enough to exfoliate deeply, although they may remove a certain amount of vellus hair. When trying these treatments at home, there is often a temptation to overdo the treatment. This can overwork your skin, causing irritation and breakouts. It is always advisable to consult an expert for optimal results.
