Hyperhidrosis is another name for excessive sweating and can lead to social anxiety and embarrassment for many. Some people may find they are able to control their excess sweating with antiperspirants and anti-deodorants. Unfortunately, for many, antiperspirants are not effective at controlling their sweat production. Whilst sweating is a normal bodily function designed to keep us cool, when it becomes excessive, it can also become a problem.

The appearance of underarm wet patches can lead to embarrassment for many people, and often dictates what colours you can wear in order to hide it as much as possible. In extreme cases, you may find yourself packing a number of tops, and even wet wipes when you leave home 'just in case'. In addition to embarrassing sweat marks, there is the delicate matter of the resulting odour when sweating. As you may know, bacteria on our skin comes into contact with the sweat resulting in the characteristic smell. Given how inconvenient and embarrassing this can be, it is little wonder that hyperhidrosis treatment is such a popular and sought-after option.

Hyperhidrosis FAQs

How does hyperhidrosis treatment work?

Not only is botulinum toxin (Botox) commonly used for cosmetic purposes, but it also plays a role for many other reasons. When strategically injected under the arms, it works by blocking the nerve signals responsible for sweating, stopping the sweat glands from producing too much sweat.

Are the injections painful?

We use very fine needles to ensure discomfort is kept to a minimum. There may be some minor discomfort during the treatment, but this is very short lived, as the treatment only takes a few minutes. There is no pain as such, put you will be aware of a stinging sensation. If you do find it a little tender, we are able to apply numbing cream first, and as always, we take every treatment at your pace.

Will I stop sweating completely?

Some people will experience virtually no underarm sweating after the treatment, but in general, we would expect an 80-90% decrease in sweat production.

How long will it stop the sweating for?

The length of time the treatment is effective for varies from person to person. It is expected that the benefits will be seen for 4-9 months. It last for up to 12 months for some people.
