What can we do for you?
If you have every noticed that your cheeks, nose or forehead become ruddy, sore and burning, chances are you are suffering from rosacea.
You may also notice pink or red bumps, or visible red veins appearing which can flare up from time to time.
Rosacea is a long-term skin condition that mainly affects the face. It's more common in women and people with lighter skin, but symptoms can be worse in men.
So, what causes it?
There are many factors that may contribute to rosacea including genetics, gender and hormone changes. Certain allergies can also trigger it.
It can also be triggered by alcohol, spicy food or exercise.
What can help?
In extreme cases, your GP may refer you to a dermatologist, and medication can help the symptoms.
The important things to consider if you are suffering from rosacea apart from lifestyle, is the products you are using on your skin. It can be very tempting to over cleanse and use a moisturiser that is too heavy or is chemical laden.
This is the last thing this condition needs.
The skin can become thinner and fragile, so it is important that you reduce the chemical burden on your skin. It’s a case of going back to basics when it comes to cleansing and hydrating. Using a cleanser and hydrator is essential but it does need to be the right formulation.
Many over the counter products are too harsh and do little to help the repair of the skin barrier.
It is worth investing in good quality skin care products as these are likely to protect the fragile skin barrier without loading on the chemicals. Our products of choice are Obagi Medical.
It is worth seeking out a skin care clinic who can help guide you.
Sun protection
Sun protection is always vital, but even more so if you suffer from rosacea. It is very common to find that most will sting and burn on application, and this will generally lead to people shying away from using them.
Sunscreen is a rosacea sufferers best friend, but make sure you are using a mineral, broad spectrum screen. This will really help to protect your skin barrier without the sting.
The best one we have found so far and use in our clinic is the OBagi Mineral sunscreen which is perfect for rosacea. As it also contains the anti-inflammatory properties of zinc, it won’t burn or sting and is gentle enough to use on your eyes too.
Can you have chemical peels?
Yes, you can, BUT it needs to be the right type. Chemical peels such as BioRePeel can be a fantastic option for rosacea sufferers as it helps to strengthen the skin barrier without burning or damage. It would depend on the condition of your skin however, and it may be advisable to continue with good homecare products first to ensure your skin is becoming stronger. A good skin clinic will be able to advise you on your suitability.
There is no need to suffer in silence these days, so the good news is that with some lifestyle tweaks and appropriate products, rosacea symptoms can be managed and controlled.
