Can lip fillers go wrong?

I’m prepared to bet that almost everyone has seen pictures online of some funky looking lips, or have settled in with popcorn to binge watch 'Botched'.

We tend to have a fascination with stuff going wrong.

But what does gone wrong actually mean?

Well, this can be divided into two categories: -

Aesthetic Result

For a lot of people, this is associated with overinflated, duck shaped lips or the dreaded “trout pout”. Although this result is not ideal (in my opinion) it doesn’t actually mean the treatment has necessarily gone wrong. This type of look was once very much requested. Trends in lip shape and size mean that the larger more protruding lip was once seen as the height of glamour and beauty. Insta pics are also very influential in dictating what is considered normal.

Some aesthetic injectors will comply with a clients’ request without giving much thought to normal lip anatomy and how the lips will look after a few weeks.

Overinflating the lips too quickly will almost always result in filler migrating to tissue outside of the lip border and will eventually lead to a distorted and misshaped upper lip.

For this reason, it is highly advisable to have lip fillers no more than twice a year. If you can’t wait that long, it may be a good shout to have the old filler dissolved and start from fresh. Contrary to popular belief, lip filler can stick around for a very long time, even if you can’t see it so much. Adding more and more without the odd dissolving session will just create poor aesthetic outcomes.

An experience practitioner will guide you and an even better one will know when to say no and put you on the filler ban naughty step for a few months.

Medical complications

As the introduction of lip fillers require needle pokes, there is always a small risk of infection. With correct advice, preparation and after care fortunately this is pretty rare, and can be treated with antibiotics should this be necessary.

Lumps, bumps, swelling, and bruising are all common after a lip procedure and will resolve themselves within a few days.

An extremely rare complication is the placement of filler into a blood vessel during the procedure. There are many ways that your injector will be able to avoid this happening, but it is possible even with the most experienced injector in the world. A well trained injector will be taught how to recognise that this has happened immediately and will be able to treat it. The filler would need to be dissolved in order to restore a good blood supply to the area. For this reason, ALWAYS seek the care and skills of an injector who knows how to spot the signs and is qualified to administer the reversing agent.

With prompt treatment, there will be total recovery and no long term complications such as scarring.

The best way of ensuring your lip fillers are beautiful, natural, and safe is to do your research into the practitioner before you pucker up. Find one that puts your wellbeing above profit, is super experienced and isn’t afraid to offer their opinion.
