What are Tear Trough Fillers, and why are they helpful?

You may or may not be aware of what exactly tear troughs are, and even less aware that there is a treatment for them.

Tear troughs are a ridge or line that starts at the corner of the eyes by your nose and runs all the way around your eyes. They are actually a very normal facial feature. If you look at babies and very young children (and why wouldn’t you, they are so cute!), but cuteness aside, you will notice that they also have a ridge under their eyes. This tells us that in principle, the tear trough has little to do with the ageing process.

That said, for some, the tear trough becomes much more prominent with age. This is due to a couple of processes that occur over time.
Firstly, the bone around the eyes (orbit) very slowly decreases in size as we age. This leads to a hollow appearance. Couple that with loss of skin elasticity and fat pad reduction and it’s easy to see why the undereye area is a real concern for many people.

There are genetic and ethnicity factors to consider too. Hollow under eyes very often run in families and some ethnicities.

It is important that your injector asks you questions before even considering performing this treatment. If you have swollen or puffy under eyes (particularly when you wake up), or if you have large eye bags, this is most likely not the best treatment for you. In some cases, you may be advised that a surgical approach would be more appropriate.

Tear trough correction is performed using a specific dermal filler that will not add volume but will smooth and gently lift the depression under the eyes. The filler can be placed with either a needle or a blunt tip tube known as a cannula. Using a needle will usually lead to more bruising, so most clinics tend to favour the cannula technique. Using a cannula also makes this treatment virtually painless. Only very small amounts of filler should be used, as the area under your eyes is very unforgiving and the last thing you want are obvious signs of filler there.

I would always advise clients to seek a natural correction, but to expect a small degree of remaining indentation as this is anatomically normal. Over correction can look very fake.

After the treatment, which generally only takes around 15 minutes, the results last for at least a year and often much longer than that.
Tear trough fillers are not a treatment for undereye shadows, however. Although this treatment may offer some lightening, dark circles will need a different approach.

You injector should very easily be able to tell you if you are a good candidate for tear trough treatment.

As you can see, the undereye area is incredibly delicate and needs to be treated appropriately. Tear trough filler is an excellent option to correct hollows and ridges and the length of time the results last is a fantastic bonus.
